Sunny Garcia: he has already said a few words | Photo: Kaila Garcia

The family of Sunny Garcia released an update on the professional surfer's health.

In late April 2019, the Hawaiian was found unconscious at home after what was reported as an attempt to take his own life.

Four months later, Garcia is already breathing without support, but still continues his long road to recovery.

"We are taking one day at a time and celebrating each little triumph. He has said a few words and is now in therapy daily physical, speech and occupational therapy," said his daughter Kaila Garcia.

"It's going to be a marathon - not a sprint. But we work every day to make sure he is surrounded by love, laughter, and ohana."

Signs of Awareness

Friends and family say that the 2000 ASP World Tour champion is starting to pay attention to voices, moves his head, follows people's faces, and already shows signs of awareness.

The power surfer is slowly regaining motor functions, working out on a stationary bike, and steadily improving his auditory processes and brain functionality.

However, it is important to stress that the journey will be long and challenging. Sunny Garcia is surrounded by his family, especially by his first wife and mother of his three children, Kaila, Logan and Stone.

A GoFundMe fundraising campaign has been set up to support medical expenses. The initiative has already helped gather around $128,000.
